Midtown

Location is Midtown’s chief asset. Midtown refers to neighborhoods of homes and businesses south and west of downtown, east of Montrose Boulevard, and north of Interstate 59, directly between Downtown and the Texas Medical Center. Midtown is also home to one of the area’s most historic neighborhood – the old Fourth Ward, also known as Freedmen’s Town.

In 1994, Midtown became a Tax Increment Finance District (TIFC), opening the area to renovation and development. Revitalization in Midtown has involved reviving the original residential nature of the area with both new construction homes and the preservation and restoration of historical homes. The ultimate goal by planners is convenient, quality housing, vertically integrated with appropriate retail and commercial support facilities.

Midtown’s population is diverse, and includes long-time residents, young professionals, empty nesters, students, and academics. There are five colleges and universities near Midtown. Lifestyle choices range from loft-style and more traditional residential condominium buildings, townhomes, apartments, patio homes, and restored historic single-family homes, with townhomes increasingly predominant. Many of the more recent developments have been designed to accommodate and encourage pedestrian activities, and the extended light rail system links Midtown with downtown, the Medical Center and the Astrodome complex.

The Midtown Redevelopment Authority works to make Midtown a place where life space and economic space come together.
